Hans-Georg Röhrbein, general manager of the Marriott San Juan Resort & Stellaris Casino, is a veteran of the hospitality industry. He quickly cites the reason why he is a satisfied Avendra customer. “Avendra has evolved into a one-stop shop,” he says, “and improved my ease of doing business.”

Hans points out that being a four-diamond resort and casino in sun-soaked Puerto Rico creates purchasing and logistical disadvantages. “Our remote island location makes the procurement of everything more difficult.”

Avendra’s purchasing power offers Hans access to a wider range of suppliers, at prices that would not otherwise be possible – and distribution options that previously did not exist. Under Avendra’s sponsorship, American Hotel Register has opened up a warehouse on the island to ensure just-in-time product availability.

“Avendra responds to our priorities,” explains Hans. “They know our standards, they understand our business drivers, they realize our storage limitations. Plus they are always looking for new or different products that could give us a competitive edge.”

More Than Selling, Service
Hans describes his relationship with the Avendra team as an ongoing dialogue. “It’s not just them telling me what’s available. I count on them to scan the marketplace, negotiate for me and help resolve any customer service issues.”

Avendra also provides an additional layer of quality control. “Because food is so perishable, we need integrity in the supply chain – to know that the frozen food is at the right temperature, that the facilities are clean. They are our eyes and ears,” says Hans.

Avendra has also demonstrated a commitment to working locally, which Hans, as a representative of the local chamber of commerce, appreciates. “We’re committed to creating opportunity here, and by integrating local suppliers into their programs, Avendra strengthens our position in the community,” according to Hans.

In other words, the service lasts way past the honeymoon phase—the Marriott San Juan has been an Avendra customer since 2003.  Hans notes, “I have to say, the question Avendra is always asking is, “What more can we do to help?”
