Flu prevention for the hospitality industry

November 30, 2011

In North America, influenza (flu) season begins in October and can last until May. The flu poses the greatest threat to senior citizens, young children and individuals who have certain health conditions, but nearly everyone is at risk for contracting the illness.

Hospitality professionals can aim to reduce the spread of germs by educating staff and guests alike about prevention. Encouraging flu vaccinations and hygienic habits may help prevent flu symptoms among guests and the hospitality industry’s workforce alike. Remind staff to stay at home if they exhibit flu-like symptoms and to limit contact with others as much as possible.

Providing staff with information on where they can get a flu shot is a smart measure. Studies show that seasonal flu shots may prevent 70 to 90 percent of healthy adults under 65 from getting the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The 2011-2012 flu vaccine has been designed to help protect against three strains of the influenza virus that are expected to be most common this flu season (included among them is the well-documented H1N1 virus).

To prevent the spread of the flu virus, encourage all staff to wash their hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Ensure that both staff and guest areas have ample tissues and antibacterial hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizing stations are especially useful in high-traffic areas, both in the front and back of the house.

Another measure hospitality businesses can take is to frequently clean commonly used surfaces, such as door handles, counters and tabletops in their main lobbies, restaurants and recreational areas, which can help prevent the spread of the virus. Consider frequently sanitizing other areas that encounter high traffic, including public telephones, restroom doors, stalls and light fixtures, fitness equipment, vending and ice machines, railings on stairways and elevator buttons. Sanitizing furniture in the lobby or other common areas can also reduce the spread of illnesses.
