While some clients are able to proceed with aspects of sustainability in mind, such as the drive to reduce plastics and packaging in their selection of “carry-out” and “to-go” options, we appreciate that everyone is prioritizing cost at this time as well. Avendra offers a few best practices below that can help to strike a good balance when purchasing disposables during COVID-19:
Amid the global disruption of COVID-19, our priority is helping customers get their properties back to business with their supply chain needs.
If temporarily switching from reusables to disposables, plan for a short-term switch and revisit returning to reusables when appropriate. Reusables would still be considered the more sustainable option, but additional care should be placed on proper cleaning and sanitation. Consider reviewing SOPs and relevant training.
Look for products that are made of renewable materials such as paper and fiber products. Prioritize options that are certified for good sourcing (e.g. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper products).
Consider recyclable or compostable materials
- Opt for materials made of recycled content. The higher the percentage of post-consumer recycled content the better.
- Chose items that are locally recyclable first (paper/cardboard, aluminum and plastics #1 and #2 are usually first choices).
- If purchasing compostable products, prioritize BPI certified products and ensure composting services are being provided.
Products to Avoid
When possible, avoid product claims such as “biodegradable” or “oxo-degradable”. Also avoid expanded polystyrene, often called “foam” or “Styrofoam”.
Also keep in mind that many local laws/regulations regarding single use plastics and other disposables remain in place, so make sure you are purchasing in line with your local legislation.
